I Am Fire , my only secular choral work, is set to the poetry of Patricia Taylor of the same title. This poem illustrates three distinct characteristics of fire, both literal and poetic. For this I wrote three sections to the work, each using a different musical idea in unique text painting to illustrate her text. Included in the text painting are sound effects that come from the choir to illustrate sounds like a crackling fire.
